Since 1940 there have been countless scandals surrounding transnational adoptions from various countries to Belgium and Flanders. It is impossible to list every single scandal since the (transnational) movement of children for adoption started. A frequently heard argument in opposition against the abolishment of transnational adoption is that illegal cases represent only a minority of adoptions, and that systemic abuses have not occurred since the Hague Adoption Convention (1995).Therefore, we see it as our duty to enlist the most important, best documented scandals to demonstrate that malpractices in adoption are systemic, widespread, and still prevalent to this day.
It is important to note that several countries (ex. China, Colombia) have been closed and reopened after consecutive scandals over the years.
